In conjunction with our exhibition Shady Acres, UMOCA will host a discussion by Jason Wheeler, AIA, Executive Director of Assist Inc. Community Design Center and Stephen James, Director of Planning and Design for Daybreak Communities on how future development can simultaneously acknowledge historic growth patterns while moving toward sustainable and inclusive neighborhoods and communities.
Myriad influences have contributed to the development patterns of housing, industry, and business in post World War II America. Demand for access to transportation, food, education, recreation, and family-friendly housing shaped our cities and communities at a relentless pace for half a century. Financial instruments, lending practices, building standards, and even construction materials were tailored to meet the needs of this uniquely American way of life. In recent years, dramatic shifts in demographics and consumer preferences have generated interest in alternatives to the traditional American Dream. However, the momentum of development models that were originally shaped to meet our 20th century patterns of living, now often impede attempts toward smarter growth patterns.
