UMOCA is Awarded Best in State 2013

Salt Lake City, UT The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) is awarded Best Museum in Utah for the third year in a row.

For over 80 years, UMOCA has had a considerable influence on the cultural and artistic life in Salt Lake’s urban atmosphere. Today, despite tremendous internal changes and a never ending slew of economic volleys, UMOCA is again recognized as one of Downtown’s most cherished centerpieces.

UMOCA’s core mission is to ensure citizens have access to the best contemporary art from Utah’s local talent and from around the world. Ground-breaking exhibits, community outreach and innovative educational programming have never been stronger thanks to a small but driven staff and board of trustees.

“We at UMOCA feel incredibly honored to receive this prestigious award for the third year in a row, particularly being among many of the West’s most exceptional museums,” says Interim Director Maggie Willis. “As a small staff, we are so thankful to our dedicated board, committee members, and our partner organizations that have continually supported UMOCA – especially through this transitional period.  We remain committed to offering the public the best local and international contemporary art.”

The Best of State Awards were created in 2003 to recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses in Utah. Best of State candidates are evaluated by a panel of 100 judges based on three criteria: achievement in the field of endeavor; innovation or creativity in approaches, techniques, methods or processes; and contribution to improving the quality of life in Utah.

Award-winning Utah Museum of Contemporary Art exhibits groundbreaking artwork by local, national, and international artists. Four gallery spaces provide an opportunity for the community to explore the contemporary cultural landscape through UMOCA’s exhibitions, films, events, classes, and presentations.

Founded in 1931, the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art has been recognized as Best Museum in the State of Utah for 2011, 2012 and 2013 and is a four-time recipient of funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation.
