Mike LeePast A-I-R
M.M. Lee spent his childhood in both rural Japan and Utah. This split in national identity is the root of Lee’s rigorous attempts to reconcile cultural and spiritual dichotomies. He draws inspiration from amassing information, both visual and non-visual, through obsessive internet searches. This makes his work, which manifests itself in various media, eclectic and confused. Belief–whether in conspiracy theories, religions, spirituality, mythology, or fringe science–is an important concept in his work. M.M. Lee creates spaces in which he tries to reconcile ideologies and imagery that seem unrelated and even paradoxical. He often uses elements of pop-culture, proto-renaissance Christian images, Japanese mythological images and patterning, and videogame aesthetics in his work. He received his BFA in Studio Art at Brigham Young University in August of 2015.
